3 killed after Leesburg crash along US Highway 441

Wreck occurred near Sleepy Hollow Road, US Highway 441

LEESBURG, Fla. – Three people were killed after a crash in Leesburg on Wednesday after a driver ended up in the wrong lane, according to fire rescue officials.

Crews said they responded to Sleepy Hollow Road and U.S. Highway 441. around 8:13 a.m.

According to police, a Ford Mustang driven by a 77-year-old man was driving south along U.S. Highway 441 when it struck the back of a Hyundai Tucson, driven by a 69-year-old woman traveling in the same direction.

The man then traveled over the center media into the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 441, ultimately crashing into a Hyundai Sonata being driven by a 42-year-old Umatilla man, police said.

A man, 54, driving a Chevrolet Silverado then struck the Sonata. The drivers of the Mustang and Silverado died at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Sonata was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, but died later in the day, according to police.

The northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 441 were closed for around three hours as crews investigated the crash, officer said.

At this time, investigators said the Mustang appears to be at fault in the crash.
