Ask Trooper Steve: Can teens drive through other states with a Florida license?

Trooper Steve answers viewer questions about rules of the road

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Trooper Steve on Thursday was asked, “My niece is 17 with a Class E Florida driver’s license. She will be visiting PA. Can she drive through other states to get to PA?”

He said, yes, if you have a driver’s license issued to you here in the state of Florida, you can drive in any other state.

“Some little things to keep in mind is, if your driver’s license does have restrictions based on your age or maybe medical condition, then you would still be required to obey those restrictions in another state,” he said.

There won’t be an issue if you just obey any of those potential restrictions, according to Trooper Steve. Thing is, younger drivers do tend to be subjected to said restrictions, but they’re good to go in any given state if they play by the rules.

“A 17-year-old here in the state of Florida is allowed to drive by themselves as long as they have a valid driver’s license. There are drive time restrictions issued to drivers who are 15, 16 and 17 years old,” he said.
