MELBOURNE, Fla. – A 3-year-old was hit and killed and their mother was injured Sunday night when the child ran into oncoming traffic, according to the Melbourne Police Department.
The crash happened around 8:20 p.m. on Dairy Road near Hall Street.
According to police, the child and two adults were leaving a vehicle that was parked in the southbound center lane of Dairy Road to return home. The child ran from the parent behind a trailer attached to their vehicle and went into the northbound lanes, police said.
According to police, the 31-year-old mother tried to stop the child, and they were both hit by a 2009 Honda Pilot.
The child was seriously injured but later died, police said.
The woman was injured, but no other details about her condition has been released.
The name of the child has not been released.
An investigation is ongoing.
