Are European license plates legal in Florida?

Trooper Steve answers viewer questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Trooper Steve on Tuesday was asked, ”I’ve seen European style license plates on the back of vehicles here in Florida. The weird part is I have seen them displaying Florida information. Is this legal?”

Trooper Steve said he has also seen a rise in those plates in Central Florida and that some people are custom making and ordering a European-style plate for their vehicle that displays all their Florida information.

“This is so illegal I do not even know where to start. We go through such a process to properly register our vehicles along with so many fees, then go and get a different plate. Makes no sense to me,” he said.

The only license plate that is allowed on your legally registered vehicle is a license plate issued to you by the State of Florida. Placing anything else as a license plate for your car would get you pulled over and a hefty fine.

“Now, if you want to be creative and place one of these on the front of your vehicle, you are totally legal to do so,” he said.
