Polk City man killed when car crashes into pole a mile away from his home

POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A 40-year-old Polk City man died Wednesday morning when he crashed into a wood power pole a mile away from his home, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened near 9950 Wilder Road, west of Polk City.

The driver, identified as Steven Russell, was traveling west on Wilder Road when his vehicle veered off the right shoulder and collided with a wooden power pole, deputies said.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the driver did not brake or correct his steering before the crash.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation is ongoing.
