Stopped school bus. Oncoming emergency vehicle. What should I do?

Trooper Steve discusses Florida traffic laws

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Trooper Steve on Tuesday was asked about a very specific scenario: When a school bus is dropping/picking students up and an emergency vehicle is coming with lights/sirens, what is proper procedure?

Great question for a traffic situation that requires everyone’s attention.

“This is the only moment when not only should all drivers be stopped, but all pedestrian traffic should stop as well,” Trooper Steve said. “When hearing the sirens, students, parents and other pedestrians should remove themselves from any roadway and remain close to the sidewalk.”

The school bus will remain stopped with lights flashing. Other civilian drivers should also remain still unless moving the vehicle is required for the emergency vehicle to get by.

“Keep in mind, you are at a school bus stop and must be extremely careful,” he added. “After the emergency situation has cleared, remain stopped as the school bus operations will resume and students will begin to either load or unload.”

Once the school bus moves on, you can do so as well.

Be safe out there!
