Pedestrian fatally struck by 2 vehicles on SR-44 near Wildwood, FHP says

WILDWOOD, Fla. – A major roadway in Sumter County was forced to close early Friday after a pedestrian was fatally struck by two vehicles, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The deadly wreck was reported around 5:55 a.m. on State Road 44 at County Road 229 near Wildwood, troopers said.

According to a preliminary FHP statement, an unknown male pedestrian attempted to walk across S.R. 44 and entered the path of two westbound vehicles. The pedestrian was struck first by a Range Rover being driven by a 42-year-old Leesburg man, then by a cement truck traveling behind it, driven by a 29-year-old Leesburg man, troopers said.

The pedestrian died at the scene of the crash, the statement reads.

The FHP initially said S.R. 44 was closed in the area, but further details about the crash have not been released.
