The FHP said a 2018 Kenworth T880 dump truck was eastbound on S.R. 44 when the driver, a 23-year-old Deltona man, swerved to avoid vehicles that were stopped for traffic. The dump truck went into the westbound lanes of S.R. 44 and crashed head-on into a 2021 Ram 1500 driven by the DeLand man, according to an FHP crash report.
The pickup driver was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
The dump truck driver was taken to AdventHealth Waterman with minor injuries, the crash report stated.
The FHP initially reported that the crash involved three vehicles but later clarified that a 2024 Toyota Camry driven by a 54-year-old DeLand woman was headed west on S.R. 44 and she slowed down for the fatal crash ahead of her.
A vehicle of an unknown make and model then rear-ended the Toyota and fled the scene, the FHP said.
The woman driving the Toyota was not seriously injured and remained at the scene, according to troopers.
Anyone with information about the hit-and-run crash is asked to call the FHP at 407-737-2213 or Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
Both directions of S.R. 44 were blocked at Misty Lane due to the crashes.
