According to the FHP, a Toyota Corolla heading south on SR-417 failed to slow down for a Ford Maverick traveling ahead of it. The Toyota swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the Ford but ended up hitting the back left of it.
The Toyota ended up disabled in the inside center lane while the Ford was able to pull off to the shoulder.
Troopers said an oncoming dump truck was traveling in the inside center lane and couldn’t stop before striking the back of the Toyota.
The driver and passenger of the Toyota — identified as a 37-year-old Kissimmee man and a 24-year-old Haines City man, respectively — were taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, troopers said.
The 30-year-old Orlando man driving the Ford and the 21-year-old Kissimmee man driving the dump truck were not injured, according to FHP.
Troopers are still investigating the crash.
