OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – A semitruck driver was killed Saturday morning when two big rigs crashed on U.S. Highway 441 in Osceola County, prompting a temporary roadblock of the busy roadway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 7:17 a.m. south of State Road 60, troopers said.
According to an FHP crash report, one semitruck was traveling south on U.S. 441 as the other traveled north. As the driver of the northbound semitruck veered into the southbound lane for an unknown reason, the driver of the southbound semitruck attempted to swerve to avoid a collision, the report states.
The front left of the northbound semitruck struck the front left of the other, causing both vehicles to run off the roadway and overturn in the wood line, troopers said. The northbound semitruck came to final rest on its roof as the southbound big rig did so on its right side, according to FHP.
The driver of the northbound semitruck — identified as a 59-year-old Orlando man — was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. The 28-year-old Orlando man driving the other semitruck was not injured in the crash, according to FHP.
A roadblock established for both directions of travel on U.S. 441 in the area of the crash was lifted before 3:30 p.m., troopers said.
FHP is still investigating.
