BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A crash along State Road 528 on Friday evening killed a 20-year-old Merritt Island woman, left three other people with serious injuries and sparked closures along the highway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened shortly before 6 p.m. in Merritt Island, east of mile marker 49, troopers said.
According to an FHP crash report, a tractor-trailer was ahead of a sedan in the left eastbound lane of S.R. 528, just east of State Road 3, when the sedan’s driver lost control of the car. The sedan ran off the roadway onto the left shoulder before rotating clockwise back onto the roadway in the direct path of the tractor-trailer, the report states.
The sedan struck the left side of the tractor-trailer, causing the car to overturn onto the right shoulder, troopers said. Three of the sedan’s four occupants — the 21-year-old Cocoa man who was driving the car, as well as a 21-year-old Cocoa man and a 17-year-old Titusville boy, both passengers — were hospitalized for treatment of serious injuries, according to FHP.
The Merritt Island woman, who was another passenger in the sedan, was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene, the report states, adding the 50-year-old Merritt Island man driving the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash.
As a result of the crash, the eastbound lanes just east of Courtenay Parkway were blocked. The roadblock has since been cleared, troopers said.
FHP is still investigating.
