Man killed in collision with semi-truck in Lakeland

Cause of crash currently under investigation

LAKELAND, Fla. – An Indianapolis man was killed in a crash involving a semi-truck on a prominent roadway in Lakeland on Thursday.

Gary Carmean, 40, was headed east in a Toyota Camry on New Tampa Highway around 3:20 p.m. when he suddenly entered the westbound lane for unknown reasons, according to investigators. He then collided head-on with a semi-truck, causing the truck to overturn on its side.

Officials reported that Carmean was transported to Lakeland Regional Health where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the semi-truck suffered minor injuries.

The Lakeland Police Department, Polk County Fire Rescue and the Lakeland Fire Department responded to the incident. The roadway was shut down for approximately three hours to process the scene for the ongoing investigation.
