SARASOTA, Fla. – A 12-year-old girl was run over by her mother Monday near Booker Middle School in Sarasota, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the girl dropped some markers and pens after she got out of a black SUV, which was near the drop-off line on a street in front of the school but not on school property.

The FHP said the girl’s mother did not see her daughter bend down under the vehicle to get the items and pulled forward and ran over the girl.

The child was airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries, the FHP said.

In an email, the school district said it “encourages all families to follow district and school safety protocols and use the designated student pickup and dropoff areas on school campuses.”

An investigation is ongoing.
