POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A 49-year-old Clermont man died in a nearly head-on crash with a semitruck Tuesday night in Polk County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. on State Road 33, near its intersection with Voyles Loop, troopers said.
According to a preliminary FHP crash report, the Clermont man was traveling south on S.R. 33 while a semitruck traveled north. The Clermont man entered the path of the semitruck while attempting to pass slower traffic ahead of him, causing the vehicles to collide nearly head-on, the report states.
Both vehicles came to final rest along the outside of the roadway, where the semitruck had otherwise gone on to strike a utility pole and guide wires, troopers said.
The 31-year-old Lake Alfred man driving the semitruck was uninjured in the crash and the Clermont man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to FHP.
