1 killed, 4 injured in 6-vehicle crash that shut down I-95 in Brevard County

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – One person was killed early Monday and four others were injured in a six-vehicle crash that shut down Interstate 95 in Brevard County, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened around 4:45 a.m. near mile marker 187, just south of Pineda Causeway.

According to a crash report, a 65-year-old Palm Bay man was traveling north on I-95 in a Honda Accord when he overcorrected to the left and went off the roadway, hitting a guardrail. The man’s vehicle went back into the northbound lanes and was struck by an oncoming BMW 330 driven by a 25-year-old Palm Bay man.

Troopers said this collision caused the 65-year-old man to be ejected from his vehicle and thrown onto the southbound lanes, where he was run over by four vehicles — a 2016 Hyundai Sonata, a 2020 Hyundai Sonata, a Kia Sorrento and a Hyundai Kona. The crash report stated the man was not wearing a seatbelt.

The Kia Sorrento, driven by a 39-year-old Palm Bay woman, ran off the road to the outside shoulder and struck a tree. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn onto its roof, FHP said.

The 65-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The 25-year-old man and the 2016 Hyundai Sonata driver, a 37-year-old Dade City man, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The 39-year-old Palm Bay woman and the 2020 Hyundai Sonata driver, a 24-year-old Orlando man, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The Hyundai Kona driver, a 51-year-old Satellite Beach man, was uninjured.

Both directions of the interstate were closed, but all lanes reopened just before 8:30 a.m.

“This has had a significant effect on traffic and there is very heavy congestion between Viera Blvd. and US-192. Motorists should anticipate slow or stopping traffic in the area for the next few hours,” FHP said after all lanes reopened.

An investigation is ongoing.
