MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A woman was killed and three other people were hurt when a sedan struck another nearly head-on in Marion County while attempting to overtake a vehicle on a two-lane road with a solid double yellow line, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. Saturday on County Road 314, east of NE 170th Avenue, responding to a scene located between Silver Springs and Salt Springs.

According to an FHP crash report, a sedan carrying two occupants — a 50-year-old woman driving with a 20-year-old man riding as a passenger, both of Pennsylvania — was traveling west on County Road 314 while another sedan with two people inside — a 57-year-old Arizona man driving and a 57-year-old California woman riding as a passenger — traveled east.

The report cites a witness who said the Pennsylvania woman attempted to overtake a vehicle ahead of her by traveling over the solid double yellow line into the eastbound lane of County Road 314, causing the front left of her vehicle to strike the front left of the other sedan.

The Pennsylvania woman’s sedan overturned onto its right side on the north grass area while the other sedan came to final rest on the south grass area, troopers said. The Pennsylvania woman suffered fatal injuries in the crash while the other three people involved suffered serious injuries, the report states.

The Arizona man and California woman had been wearing seat belts during the crash while the two people from Pennsylvania had not, troopers said.

FHP is still investigating.
