TAMPA, Fla. – A wrong-way crash early Saturday in Tampa left an Orlando man dead and a Bartow woman with serious injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 2:52 a.m. near milepost 6 on State Road 618 (Selmon Expressway), troopers said.

According to a preliminary FHP crash report, a Honda FIT being driven by a 40-year-old Bartow woman was traveling westbound in the outside eastbound lane of S.R. 618 and a Toyota Yaris being driven by a 33-year-old Orlando man was traveling eastbound in the inside eastbound lane of S.R. 618 before the two vehicles collided head-on.

The Honda rotated and came to final rest in the eastbound travel lanes while the Toyota rotated and struck a concrete barrier wall, the report states.

The Orlando man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and the Bartow woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, troopers said.

Though it’s currently unknown where the Bartow woman began traveling in the wrong direction, as well as the reasons behind the travel pattern, the crash is still being investigated and charges are pending, according to FHP.
