MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A driver was killed and his passenger was badly hurt when their pickup truck veered off of Interstate 75 in Marion County on Friday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened along northbound I-75 at mile marker 372, not far from the Alachua County line, troopers said. An exact time of the crash was not immediately available.
According to an FHP crash report, the pickup truck was traveling north in the center lane when it veered left, traveling in a northwesterly direction off the roadway, across the west paved shoulder and onto the center grass median of I-75.
The front left of the pickup struck a guardrail in the center median, the report states. Troopers said the truck rotated counter-clockwise while traveling in a northeasterly direction and ultimately overturned onto its left side, where it came to final rest.
The driver — a 54-year-old man from Reddick — was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said, adding he was not wearing his seat belt during the crash.
The passenger — a 33-year-old Reddick woman — suffered serious injuries in the crash and was hospitalized in critical condition, the report states. Troopers believe she was wearing a seat belt during the crash.
