LAKELAND, Fla. – A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross a road in Lakeland on Tuesday and later died, according to police.
Officers responded around 7:39 p.m. to the area of the 2100 block of E Edgewood Drive, where the pedestrian — identified as William Crede, 69 — had reportedly been struck by an eastbound 2015 BMW. Crede was crossing the road in a southerly direction and had walked into the path of the BMW when the crash occurred, the Lakeland Police Department said in a statement.
The 26-year-old man driving the BMW stopped and remained at the scene, the statement reads.
First responders from Polk County Fire Rescue — along with Lakeland’s police and fire departments — began life-saving measures for Crede, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.
The roadway was shut down for around two hours as traffic homicide investigators worked the scene, police said.
