JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An 8-month-old baby died on Saturday afternoon after being placed in the street and struck by a vehicle, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and News 6 partner News 4 Jax.
Officials said that just before 11 a.m., an accident took place along Lenox and McDuff avenues involving one car, a man, a woman, and an 8-month-old.
The incident began when a fight broke out between the driver and the passenger. JSO did not specify if the man or woman was driving the vehicle.
“The driver stopped the vehicle at the intersection, opened the door, and placed the child on the ground,” JSO said. “The driver then drove off, striking the child with the vehicle.”
Jacksonville Fire Rescue took the child to the hospital where medical staff declared them dead.
JSO’s Crime Scene Unit and Traffic Homicide Unit are at the scene completing their investigation, adding that the driver is “with police officers.”
JSO added that though they have not confirmed it, both of the vehicle’s occupants are believed to be the child’s parents.
