ORLANDO, Fla. – It is a huge pet peeve of mine because I simply cannot understand why drivers do this to their vehicles.
Yes, you absolutely can and likely will get a ticket for having a tinted license plate cover in Florida.
We need to remember that the license plate does not belong to us; it is technically on loan from the state. Maintaining a properly registered and clearly visible license plate allows the state and law enforcement to verify that your vehicle is legally operating on the roadway.
Any obstruction of your license plate, whether partial or complete, is a violation of the law. This includes tinted or even clear plastic covers, as they can distort the plate’s visibility under certain lighting conditions. In some cases, people go even further by intentionally obscuring their plates to evade tolls, red-light cameras, or law enforcement detection. An offense that can lead to even more serious consequences.
Bottom line: If your license plate is not fully visible and legible at all times, you’re giving law enforcement an easy reason to pull you over. Save yourself the trouble, remove the cover, and keep your plate clear and unobstructed.
