Plant City woman dies after tractor-trailer hits ambulance she was riding in, troopers say

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A woman riding in a Hillsborough County Fire Rescue ambulance died after the vehicle entered an intersection without yielding and was struck by a tractor-trailer late Friday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 11:35 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 39 and McGee Road, troopers said.

According to a preliminary FHP crash report, the ambulance was being driven eastbound on McGee Road by a 26-year-old man as the tractor-trailer traveled north on S.R. 39, driven by a 52-year-old Wesley Chapel man.

Upon colliding, the tractor-trailer jackknifed onto the shoulder while the ambulance overturned, the report states, adding the ambulance was in non-emergency mode when it entered the intersection.

A 64-year-old Plant City woman riding in the ambulance as a patient suffered injuries in the crash and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital, troopers said.

The Wesley Chapel man was not injured, but the 26-year-old man driving the ambulance and a 47-year-old crewmember who was with him both suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized, according to FHP.
