Lake Nona High School student dies after fiery crash on Narcoossee Road in Orlando

2 other students injured in wreck

ORLANDO, Fla. – A Lake Nona High School student critically injured in a fiery crash Wednesday afternoon on Narcoossee Road in Orlando has died, according to police.

The two-vehicle wreck happened before noon on Narcoossee Road at Nonacrest Drive, west of State Road 417.

The student, one of the drivers, was one of three injured in the crash. The other two people injured were also students at Lake Nona High School.

The Orlando Police Department said the two vehicles were being driven recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed before the drivers lost control, according to a statement.

Both vehicles then left the roadway and crashed into trees, police said, before catching on fire.

Fire officials said the student who died suffered severe burns.

Orange County Public Schools released a statement Wednesday on the wreck and said the three students were seniors at Lake Nona High School.

District staff and the Lake Nona High School community are saddened to learn that 3 seniors were involved in a severe car accident this afternoon near Narcoossee Rd and Nonacrest Dr., just over 2 miles away from campus. One victims suffered severe burn injuries, while the other two victims suffered injuries as a result of the crash.

All 3 victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Orlando Police Department is investigating this case. At this time, the victim’s names are not being released.

Starting tomorrow, there will be grief counselors on campus for all students and staff who need to speak to someone, they will be on campus for as long as they are needed. Principal Campbell will be sending a voice message this afternoon to LNHS families with more information.

Families, please take time tonight to speak with your child about the importance of safe driving and making responsible choices. This is terrible news for the Lake Nona and greater Orlando community and I am hoping for our students' wellbeing and speedy recovery from this tragedy.

The two other students in the wreck were hospitalized and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

While all lanes of Narcoossee Road were initially closed, lanes later reopened after 4 p.m.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or the events leading up to it is asked to call police.

An investigation is ongoing.
