TITUSVILLE, Fla. – A man died in a crash early Friday after running from Titusville police, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 2:20 a.m. in the area of Park Avenue and South Street.

According to an FHP crash report, the 42-year-old Titusville man was traveling westbound on Park Avenue, east of State Road 405 (South Street), before his sedan struck a closed gate to a dump. The sedan then ran off the roadway, became airborne and struck a ditch, the report states.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said, adding he was not wearing a seat belt.

Before the crash, a witness told FHP they saw that the sedan was blacked out — meaning its headlights and taillights were switched off — and was traveling at a high rate of speed while crossing the intersection of Park Avenue and S.R. 405.

The driver was fleeing the Titusville Police Department, which had already lost visual contact with the sedan about a mile away from the intersection and was not actively pursuing it at the time of the crash, the report states.

Troopers recovered a stolen firearm in the vehicle, according to the report.

FHP is still investigating.
