TALLAHASSEE – As Florida braces for impacts from a winter storm, schools and universities in northern Florida are canceling classes ahead of the winter weather.
Florida State University and Florida A&M University in Tallahassee canceled classes and suspended all normal operations for Tuesday, Jan. 21, through Wednesday, Jan. 22, because of the threat of severe weather.
Both universities are set to open back up on Thursday, Jan. 22, while monitoring weather changes.
Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour or more were possible from eastern Texas to the western Florida Panhandle and historic snowfall of 3 to 6 inches was forecast along the Interstate 10 corridor including Houston; New Orleans; Mobile, Alabama; and Pensacola, Florida, according to the weather service.
Heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected across Georgia, northern Florida and the eastern Carolinas from Tuesday night into Wednesday.
“Students are strongly encouraged to return to the Tallahassee area before road conditions are anticipated to deteriorate Tuesday evening. There is a potential for road closures around the region, that could include Interstates, Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.,” FSU said in a post on X.
