Ways to have a healthy heart, factors to consider

Altamonte Springs physician talks all things heart health

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – Dr. Josselin Vachon, MD, who specializes in cardiology, offered advice on what steps to take to limit heart failure risk.

Obesity is one of the leading factors in heart health risk today, according to Vachon. It is linked to various conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks and sleep apnea.

What you eat and how much you eat are the best ways to fight against obesity.

“I don’t like the word diet because often people make it way too complicated,” he noted, suggesting simple strategies like using a dessert plate instead of a dinner plate to control portion sizes.

For younger individuals, it is important to consider genetics and family history when looking at heart health risks.

He stressed that regular screenings might not be necessary for those without symptoms or family history of heart disease. Instead, focusing on risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking can help manage potential heart issues.

Seeking medical advice when experiencing unusual symptoms like shortness of breath or chest pain.

“When the heart suffers, it tends to accelerate as a sign of stress,” he explained, urging individuals to consult their primary care physician if they notice significant changes in their health.

When asked to describe heart disease in one word, Vachon chose “dependence,” reflecting the reliance on medical interventions and the impact of heart health on daily living.

“A healthy heart helps you maintain a good quality of life,” Vachon said, highlighting the impact of heart health on independence and daily activities.
