DeLand officer investigated over Taser use

Same officer also involved in January shootout

DeLAND, Fla. – A DeLand officer who shot two men in January was temporarily banned from using a Taser six years ago, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

On Jan. 22, Officer Bobby Harrelson fired at two men who were holding a rifle, authorities said.

Police found out later the rifle was a BB gun.

Records from 2006 show Harrellson used a Taser 12 times in 12 minutes against a burglary suspect, according to the paper.  The suspect eventually pleaded guilty.

The department decided Harrelson was justified to use his Taser, but he should have switched to a different tactical approach when it failed to subdue the suspect.
