The driver of the truck, which had a trailer attached to the back of it, said he had just launched his boat into the water using a ramp when he went to park the truck in a nearby parking lot, according to the traffic report.
Driving east on South Peninsula Drive, the driver had just turned left into the entrance of the parking lot when he hit Chitwood, the report said. The driver said he did not see the sheriff on his bike until after he hit him.
The driver remained on the scene and was cited for failure to yield by the Ponce Inlet Police Department.
The sheriff sustained a broken left hand, a possible ACL tear to his right knee, and two fractured vertebrates.
Chitwood said Friday that he anticipated returning to work as soon as possible.
