Man taken into custody after shootout with Daytona Beach police

Dozens of officers, deputies called to area near Westside Elementary School

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A man was taken into custody Monday, hours after he opened fire on Daytona Beach police, prompting a shootout that closed roadways and prevented an elementary school from opening on time, according to authorities.

Daytona Beach police said Joseph Calvin Jaynes II was taken into custody following the shootout, which started around 12:30 a.m. off Piccadilly Drive near Jimmy Ann Drive, south of LPGA Boulevard and west of Derbyshire Road, not far from Westside Elementary School.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said officers were patrolling Piccadilly Drive early Monday after a weekend fight involving Jaynes and his roommate, who was arrested Sunday on allegations of firing shots during the dispute. Young said a bullet struck a house across the street, but no one was injured.

Young said officers noticed that the roommates’ garage door was open early Monday, so they checked the home but no one was there.

As the officers were leaving the house, they heard a gunshot and took cover, Young said.

The officers located the suspected shooter, who was armed with a rifle that had a flashlight attached to it, and ordered him to drop the gun, but he refused and pointed it at them, Young said.

A shootout ensued, with five officers firing at the man, who was struck in the right leg and ran into nearby woods, according to Young.

No officers were injured in the shootout.

A standoff ensued as police brought in special equipment to take the man, later identified as Jaynes, into custody.

Young said Jaynes had called 911 while he was in the woods to report his injury, and he was connected to negotiators who spoke with him several times during the hours-long incident.

Jones crawled into a truck near a canal, where he stayed for several hours and fired more shots at officers, police said. He exited the truck around 6 a.m. and was taken into custody a short time later, according to police.

Young said it’s not known why Jaynes engaged in a shootout with police.

“It sounds a little chaotic because it is,” said Young, who added that a reverse 911 call was made to nearby residents, warning them to stay indoors. “Bullets don’t have names on them.”

Jaynes faces 10 felony counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

Jimmy Ann Drive was shut down from Heathrow Drive to 5th Street, and Westside Elementary did not open until the incident was resolved, police said.
