Officers said the man, identified as 36-year-old Randy Lansang, who was shot by police was wanted on an open warrant.

During a news conference Thursday, Chief Jakari Young said he had “an extensive criminal history” that included charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, shooting into an occupied dwelling, robberies, auto theft and burglary.

Investigators said Daytona Beach police officers were monitoring the man, wanted in connection to a shooting in the Fairway Estates neighborhood earlier this month, and followed a white sedan before making a traffic stop near the U.S. 1 and Beville Road intersection. The police chief said the shooting was a drive-by where shots were fired at a residence and no one was injured.

Young said a woman was driving the car and the suspect was in the passenger seat.

Officers said they boxed in the vehicle in order to take the man into custody. Authorities said they sent in a K-9 unit when the man refused to leave the vehicle.

Investigators said as the K-9 attempted to pull him out of the sedan, the man appeared to reach for a gun, prompting officers to open fire.

Four officers were involved in the incident, according to police. Per department policy, the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave. Their names have not been released.

A man who took cellphone video of the scene Wednesday night said he was at his home nearby when he heard gunshots.

“It did not stop at all. It was 10 continuous shots,” Luis Negron said.

Negron said he went outside and saw a person on the ground.

“They were trying to revive him, but I guess it didn’t work,” he said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.
