DELTONA, Fla. – A nurse for a Deltona nursing facility was arrested Monday by Volusia County deputies, accused of stealing drugs such as hydrocodone and oxycodone, and falsifying patient records.

Christopher Braunle, 48, is accused of improperly signing out the drugs to be administered to patients, many of whom are elderly.

The nursing facility conducted an audit of its controlled medication inventory after notifying sheriff’s detectives on March 22 of suspicious activity, according to a news release. The sheriff’s office said the audit showed Braunle signed out medications for patients using two different sign-out sheets, taking one pill for the patient and a second for himself.

Because the medications were signed out on two sheets, the facility told detectives that finding the theft was made more difficult.

Detectives said the records showed Braunle was suspected of stealing 90 pills since January. They say Braunle told detectives the pills were for personal use and were not distributed to anyone else.

Braunle faces 90 counts of grand theft and 24 counts of falsifying records.
