Search underway for gunman who shot at Daytona Beach police officers

No officers were injured, police say

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Shots were fired at two Daytona Beach officers Thursday afternoon, prompting an increased police presence and investigation around the area, the department said.

The Daytona Beach Police Department said officers responded to a well-being check around 3:22 p.m. in the 900 block of Essex Road.

The officers, who were unable to locate the subject by phone or in person, began walking back to their patrol cars when they heard three to four gunshots directed at them, according to the police department.

The two officers were not injured in the incident, police said.

According to detectives, a door-to-door search was conducted after the shooting to ensure everyone’s safety. Officers said an investigation, as well as increased police presence, has been launched around that area.

“We take this type of violence very seriously and an attack on our officers will not be tolerated. We will be conducting a relentless investigation into this cowardly act... We do not believe there is any immediate threat to the community, but will be increasing our presence in this area until this incident is resolved and fully investigated,” the department said in a statement.
