Sanford home ‘total loss’ after damage from smoke, fire, officials say

None of the four people in the home were hurt by flames, firefighters say

SANFORD, Fla. – A home in Sanford was damaged after flames ripped through it Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 1800 block of Harding Avenue just after 3 p.m., according to a tweet.

Crews said all four people inside the home were able to safely leave by the time they arrived. Flames extended into nearly 2/3 of the house, resulting in a “total loss” of the home from fire and smoke damage, according to Seminole County Fire Department.

The battalion commander told News 6 that fire crews believe the fire may have started in the garage area.

“They had a little man-cave-garage conversion,” he said. “It appears to be where it started. It’s not confirmed yet, but everything is leading toward that.”

Fire officials said the investigation pointed to the cause being electrical, although it is still under investigation.

Seminole County fire officials later clarified that the home had no working smoke alarms.

The Red Cross was called to help the people the victims.
