Woman shot, killed in Daytona Beach by boyfriend who tried to shoot her ex, police say

Chad Keene, 37, arrested after hourslong manhunt

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A man accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend during a confrontation with the woman’s ex-boyfriend in Daytona Beach, according to the police department.

Police said Chad Keene, 37, was taken into custody Tuesday in the fatal shooting that happened at 11:56 a.m. near 315 Glenview Boulevard. Officers found Karli Elliott who was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Daytona Beach police Chief Jakari Young said during an update on Tuesday that Elliott had an argument in front of a 7-Eleven on Oleander Avenue with an ex-boyfriend and when she left, she called her boyfriend, Keene.

Young said Keene confronted the ex-boyfriend and fired a gun.

“So we don’t believe that Karli was the intended victim. We believe the ex-boyfriend was the intended victim,” he said.

The chief said police learned Keene was possibly inside a residence on Halifax Avenue and SWAT team members made their way into the apartment and did not find Keene there. He said Keene was picked up and taken to another location, prompting a lockdown of three schools in the area while police searched for him.

Body-worn camera video released by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office shows law enforcement arresting Keene, who was found in his vehicle around 6 p.m. at Nova Road and US-1.

Keene faces charges of second-degree murder not premeditated and possession of a weapon/ammo by a convicted felon.

Halifax Avenue was closed between Seabreeze and University boulevards but later reopened as police searched for the suspect.
