16-year-old boy critically injured after 2 people shot him in Brevard County, deputies say

Shots fired on Cypress Avenue

MIMS, Fla. – A 16-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot by two people in Mims, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said the shooting happened Monday around 9 p.m. near Cypress Avenue.

Deputies said the 16-year-old was with two other teens when they were approached by two other people, who then began shooting at them. The sheriff’s office said the teen was shot while running away.

Dispatchers reported receiving multiple 911 calls describing up to 100 shots being fired.

Clarence Jones said he heard about 14 of the shots and he could even see the muzzle flashes.

“I was coming up the road and seen it sparking across the street,” he described.

The shooting was a targeted attack, according to deputies, and no arrests have been made.

“It scares me and I’m quite sure it scares a lot more people,” neighbor Willie Pearl Smith said.

The 74-year-old feared the shooting was just the latest example of violence in east Mims.

On the same street in August, the sheriff’s office said Tommy Brothers, 21, was shot and killed during a deal for marijuana.

Within walking distance of Cypress Avenue, deputies said Ashton Geiger, 30, was killed back in January.

“I was just thinking about getting out of here, moving because I’ve never seen Mims like this before,” Smith said.

Officials said the boy’s name is not being released at this time.
