VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A man armed with two knives was shot and injured by a deputy in New Smyrna Beach on Sunday, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the man was suffering an “erratic mental health episode” at his parents’ home when he advanced out the front door directly toward the deputy, before being shot.
The man was treated for his injuries by deputies on the scene before being transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said they received a call just after 1 p.m. in regards to the man located at 3946 Lakeshore Drive, the second call in the last three weeks involving the man acting erratically with knives.
The subject of a call about an armed person threatening others at 3946 Lakeshore Drive, NSB, was shot & injured today after advancing toward a deputy. The subject was stabilized and transported for treatment of his injuries. More information will be provided in a future update.

Deputies said they responded to the house on Jan. 17 after the man’s mother reported he was armed, screaming, paranoid and possibly hallucinating during an apparent mental health episode.
During that incident, he was not receptive to attempts to communicate with him and connect him with counseling services, deputies said.
On Sunday, deputies said they again tried to negotiate with the man, but were unsuccessful.
After entering the house through a back door, deputies attempted to use multiple Taser deployments and a less-lethal shotgun to subdue the man. but he headed out the front door where another deputy was stationed just outside the house, according to the release.
Officials said around 2:38 p.m., a deputy fired his gun after the man charged toward him.
The man’s parents were not injured in the incident nor were any of the deputies involved.
According to the release, the man was recently released from prison in October after serving about four years for charges including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. His arrest in that case came after he stabbed a Port Orange man multiple times in July 2017. Deputies said his Florida criminal history includes 31 felony charges with 17 convictions, and 33 misdemeanor charges with 19 convictions.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement responded to conduct an independent investigation, deputies said.
