NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – An archeologist working in New Smyrna Beach uncovered human remains Tuesday at a historical site, according to police.

Officers said they responded around 9 a.m. to a wooded area in the 1700 block of North Dixie Freeway after an archeologist working for the city of New Smyrna Beach uncovered a bone at a documented historical site where they believe there could be traces of Native American ruins.

According to officers, they were able to identify and recover about 30 bones total, including a human skull.

At this time, police said the identity, race and sex of the individual is unknown and they are currently trying to determine a cause of death.

DNA will be used to identify the person, the department added.

Police have not specified the historical site where the bones were discovered.
