Brevard school board meets for 1st time since interim superintendent put on leave

Dr. Robert Schiller accused of fostering toxic workplace

VIERA, Fla. – The Brevard County School Board met on Thursday for the first time after an unexpected ousting of the district’s interim superintendent.

During a scheduled work session, board members discussed administrative issues and the search for the district’s next superintendent.

On Tuesday, the board voted unanimously to place Dr. Robert Schiller on administrative leave. School Board Chair Matt Susin said it’s a decision that board members didn’t take lightly.

“As any organization that ever does have some things like this, it’s a grave concern because our focus is always on the kids,” Susin said.

The vote came after Schiller made demands for a new contract and some employees complained of a hostile work environment.

“We had a series of allegations that we then implemented an investigation and we don’t talk about investigations,” Susin said.

While the district looks into the complaints, a search is underway for the next superintendent.

“I think that we’re in a good place,” Susin said. “We have some really good applicants that are coming in.”

Meanwhile, Sue Hann took part in her first work session since she was appointed as acting superintendent. Susin said the decision has made her Brevard County’s first female superintendent.

“We have a dynamic person who not only understands budgets, but she has the respect of people and at a time when people are concerned,” Susin said.  “Know that we have somebody special.”

The deadline for superintendent applications is Friday.  A special meeting to discuss the superintendent search is scheduled for April 4.
