EDGEWATER, Fla. – Edgewater police responded to a shooting involving officers on Friday evening, according to a release by the police department.
Police said they responded to 423 North Riverside Drive just after 5 p.m. on Friday after receiving calls from the homeowner and another person about a suicidal man.
Upon arrival, police found the man, who didn’t live at the residence but was acquainted with the homeowner, the report shows.
The two responding officers tried speaking with the man in the backyard, and after a brief conversation, he pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it toward the officers, according to the department.

In response, the officers fired their own guns to protect themselves and managed to incapacitate the man, police said. Officers said they then tried to render aid, though he ultimately died at the scene.
Police said the officers were not injured during the gun fight. Both were placed on administrative leave per department procedure, the release says.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
