Worker dies in lightning strike on roof of Deltona house

Man fell from home under construction on Sterling Point Drive near Arbor Hill Drive

DELTONA, Fla. – A man in his 20s was killed on a construction site Monday afternoon after coworkers reported he was struck by lightning, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Rescue officials said the incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. at the site located on Sterling Point Drive near Arbor Hill Drive after storms rolled through the area.

Witnesses said the man was standing on the roof of a house working on framing when “a lightning bolt struck him and caused him to fall to the concrete below.”

Deputies said Edvin Velasquez Cinto, 24, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead around 2:39 p.m.

According to a news release, information gathered at the scene and findings from an examination of the victim’s body are consistent with a lightning strike, but an official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

No other information has been released by authorities.
