Person of interest arrested in deadly shooting on Nova Road in Daytona Beach

Officers searched for Kia they believed was involved in deadly attack

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A person of interest was arrested Wednesday following a fatal shooting in traffic, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.

Police said the shooting happened just before 2 p.m. on South Nova Road near Bellevue Avenue.

On Wednesday evening, the police department released a statement:

“Many (reporters) have emailed inquiring about a recent arrest made of a person of interest in connection to the homicide that occurred this afternoon on Nova Road. I can confirm that an arrest has been made of a person of interest on unrelated charges. Further details are forthcoming.”

Officials identified the person of interest as Devonte Smokes. According to an incident report, he was arrested on multiple charges, including aggravated fleeing and eluding.

Investigators said a man was a stopped at red light when a dark-colored Kia pulled up alongside him. Officers said someone inside the Kia opened fire.

The victim was rushed to a hospital, where he later died, according to investigators.

Police said there was a passenger in the car with the victim but did not say whether anyone else was injured in the shooting.

Video from Sky 6 showed police examining a blue Hyundai stopped in the road near a Sunoco gas station. The car appeared to have several bulletholes in the driver’s side doors.

Officers then began looking for the Kia.

Investigators have not given any information about the victim or what led to the deadly shooting.

No information has been provided about the person of interest’s connection to this shooting.

Smokes appeared in court, where a judge booked him without bond.

He faces multiple charges, including violation of probation, resisting an officer without violence, felony driving with license suspended or revoked, fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer at a high speed, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of fentanyl and engaging in a sexual act with a victim between the ages of 16-17.
