Man arrested after shooting in New Smyrna Beach parking lot, police say

Stephen Hammersley, 66, faces aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charges

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A man was arrested after another was shot in a parking lot Thursday morning in New Smyrna Beach, according to the police department..

Police responded to reports of a person shot in the 1500 block of South Dixie Freeway around 8:15 a.m. on Thursday.

According to officers, witnesses said they saw two men fighting, but did not see the shooting occur. Upon arrival, police said they found the suspect and victim, who was shot in the stomach and taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The suspected shooter, later identified as 66-year-old Stephen Hammersley, was arrested, according to the department.

Hammersley faces a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Volusia County jail, where he is being held on a $10,000 bond.
