FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday for an $18 million expansion project at Matanzas High School in Flagler County.
Interim Superintendent LaShakia Moore, Matanzas High School principal Kristin Bozeman, Flagler County School Board Members Cheryl Massaro, Christy Chong, Will Furry and Sally Hunt, as well as Flagler Schools Chief of Operational Services Dave Freeman and Director of Plant Services Kory Bush attended the ceremony at the 3535 Pirate Nation Way campus in Palm Coast.

School officials said the project will renovate more than 31,000 square feet of the campus, including adding a 20,000-square-foot classroom.
“This project has taken so much planning,” Moore said. “We’ve talked about this for so long that seeing the work begin is exciting. This brings life to the renderings we’ve looked at over the past year.”

The project, designed by SchenkelShultz Architecture and contracted by HA Contracting Corp., will also include a larger media center, expanded cafeteria space, new central energy plan and pre-engineered metal building to support the school’s physical education programs.
“This expansion is setting up Matanzas for future growth as we continue to see rooftops rise all around our campus,” Bozeman said. “We may have to deal with a few challenges with having a construction zone in the middle of your campus, but in the end, our students, faculty, and staff will have a campus design that will better fit our needs.”
Classes will be conducted normally during construction and work will be phased in as needed to minimize interruptions. School officials expect the project to be completed by July 2025.
