Another 460 Volusia students may be rezoned next school year

5th area to be part of rezoning discussions

DEBARY, Fla. – Volusia school district leaders added another group of students to those who may be rezoned next school year, bringing the total to almost 1,400 students.

The latest proposal was voted in by the school board on Tuesday evening. It includes about 460 students in the DeBary and Enterprise area, where the district’s data showed six elementary schools are currently at or over capacity.

News 6 spoke with parents Wednesday at DeBary Elementary School.

“She has a bunch of friends here and things like that, so picking up her life and moving it to a different school would be difficult,” said Taylor, a father who was picking up his daughter from school.

It’s the fifth area to be added to the school board’s discussions of where they will be shuffling students around to schools nearby that have more room to grow.

Right now, the district is holding community rezoning meetings. The district would then start notifying parents of any official changes in March.

Some parents News 6 talked to said they are now on the edge of their seats to see the decision, even if they do understand the reasoning.

“I feel there are so many students, they need more space,” said Vanessa, another parent.
