VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 5-year-girl was injured after accidentally shooting herself in the leg on Saturday afternoon, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the accidental shooting happened at a home on Boxelder Street in Deltona around 12:47 p.m. after the child “gained access to a shotgun under a family member’s bed.”

According to a news release, deputies at the scene applied a tourniquet and carried the child to Deltona Fire Rescue.

The child was transported to a hospital, but deputies did not disclose her condition.

“Staff reported that the rapid response and tourniquet application likely saved her life,” the release read in part.
Detectives are investigating the circumstances of the shooting and will forward the findings of their investigation to the State Attorney’s Office for review. according to the release.
