Teen sentenced to 9 years in prison for shooting, killing man at Flagler County party

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – A 17-year-old has been sentenced to nine years in prison followed by 15 years probation for the shooting death of a man at a Flagler County party in 2022.

According to a news release from the 7th Judicial Circuit, Da’Mari Barnes who was 15 at the time he was accused of shooting and killing Jamey Bennett, Jr. on Feb. 5, 2022.

Barnes pled in October to a charge of manslaughter with a firearm.

Officials said that a group of teens were in a wooded area in Palm Coast for a bonfire party on the night of the shooting.

According to the release, Barnes went to the party armed with a gun in the front pocket of his hooded sweatshirt.

During the party, a girl accidentally bumped into Barnes, who yelled and shoved her in response, deputies said.

Jamey Bennett, Jr., 19 years old at the time, defended the girl which led to a fight between him and Barnes.

According to the release, Barnes pulled out his gun and shot the victim in the chest. Bennett died at the hospital.
