Plane crashes into aircraft at Sanford airport, erupts into flames

Incident involved 2 single-engine aircrafts from a local training facility

SANFORD, Fla. – A multi-plane crash took place at Orlando-Sanford International Airport Tuesday night around 6:30 p.m., the Sanford Airport Fire Department told News 6.

A battalion chief said at least two small planes were involved.

Officials with the Orlando Sanford International Airport later said the incident involved two single-engine aircraft from a local training facility.

One of the aircraft landed short and came into contact with an unoccupied, parked single-engine aircraft, according to a news release.

Airport officials said three people were involved in the crash, but there were no serious injuries to report.

A short time later, the Federal Aviation Administration reported that two people were on board the single-engine Cirrus SR20.

News 6 is working to confirm the total number of people involved.

Airport officials said they expect the runway will reopen on Tuesday evening.

Cody Herzog works nearby, and he told News 6 that he was at his business when he noticed something unusual.

“Just hear a loud, what sounded basically like a car crash...” he said. “I didn’t pay much attention to it at all. I just kind of minded my own business until I started hearing all the sirens come through.”

The FAA said that the National Transportation Safety Board will be in charge of the investigation.
