DELAND, Fla. – Law enforcement is gearing up for a busy spring break along the coast in Volusia County. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said they will be cracking down on teenagers coming to the area unsupervised.
Sheriff Chitwood said they’re going to be looking for reckless behavior and underaged drinking, but also vaping and drugs. He said they’re seeing a rise this year in teens using vapes and drugs being laced with much harder substances.

“We live in a dangerous world now. We’re watching where high school kids that are vaping that when they’re arrested or something occurs and they take a urine test, they’re testing positive for fentanyl, cocaine, and meth – and the kids are like ‘well I’m just smoking THC oil,’” he said.

Sheriff Chitwood said there will be more deputies and police than ever before out on the beaches and in popular spots like Flagler Avenue. They will have tools to monitor the crowds from aerial view, too.
