According to Bunnell police, the hunter said he saw three female turkeys on the road and followed them until he saw a male turkey.

The hunter said he fired his shotgun before realizing in the low light that “male turkey” was a decoy, police said. The hunter said he then heard someone shout that they had been shot.

The hunter called 911 and expressed remorse for the shooting, according to police.

Police officers and Flagler County sheriff’s deputies found the victim, who had been shot in the head and torso with what appeared to be bird shot, officials said. The victim was airlifted to Halifax Health in Daytona Beach, police said. His condition was not released.

Officers said at the location of the shooting they found a shotgun shell, a stake to secure the decoy, a turkey call striker and several small puddles of blood.

It’s not known if any charges will be filed in the shooting, which will be investigated by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.

No other details have been released.
