Volusia County OK longer distances for sex predators from schools, playgrounds

Sex predators now need to stay 1,500 away from certain places

DELAND, Fla. – In a five-to-two vote, the Volusia County Council Tuesday approved an ordinance to adjust its current sex offender and predator ordinance so that those individuals will now have to live further from places like schools, churches and playgrounds.

The new ordinance increases the distance from 1,000 feet to 1,500 feet that sexual predators need to buffer between where they live and those places.

Councilman Danny Robbins originally pushed for this change saying Volusia County ranks in the top five statewide for sexual offenders and predators.

It’s a welcomed change for some parents in DeLand that News 6 talked to.

“I worry about the schools because my grandchildren are in school and it’s just very hard with the middle schools, the high schools. I’ve got them everywhere and it’s just going to make a whole lot of difference,” said Linda Rosekelly.

The county said those registered who already live within that 500 feet buffer would not have to move.
